The Edge was always something of an oddity in the Netherlands: a large American SUV that Ford kept in its range here for only a few years. As a result there are few on the road, and a damaged one is certainly not an everyday find. On this page we collect what our affiliated car dealers, traders and dismantling companies offer, from the Netherlands and abroad. What is listed here is determined by what our partners buy in, and that changes from day to day. The Edge that Ford supplied for Europe came from Canada and was available from 2016. In addition, there are imported examples from the United States on the road, with very different engines. That distinction determines the value and the availability of parts.
The first European Edges have a 2.0 TDCi diesel with 180 or 210 hp and four-wheel drive as standard. It is a spacious, heavily built SUV with a towing weight of 2,000 kg and an interior set up for comfort.
These cars now show high mileages. Look at the condition of the particulate filter and the automatic gearbox; on this type, those are the items that turn a seemingly cheap car into an expensive one after all.
Also pay attention to the noise level in the cabin. Ford built the Edge with active noise cancellation; if that system no longer works, you will notice straight away.
At a length of almost 4.80 metres, it sat above the Kuga in Europe, a segment in which Ford otherwise had little to offer.
The update brought the 2.0 EcoBlue, in its most powerful form a 238 hp twin-turbo with an eight-speed automatic. Outwardly the Edge received a new front end and, inside, an electronic gear selector. Trim levels ran from Titanium to ST-Line and the luxurious Vignale.
Not long afterwards, Ford withdrew the model from its European range, which kept this series small in number. That makes an unblemished example scarce and a salvage car all the more interesting as a source of parts.
Edges with petrol engines come from the United States, including the 2.0 EcoBoost and the 2.7 V6 of the sporty ST. Those cars differ in lighting, bumper height and equipment.
If you buy such an example, always ask for the import papers and check that the car is registered in the Netherlands. That saves a lot of sorting out later.
With an American Edge, also look at the odometer. A reading in miles that has been converted to kilometres should be documented, otherwise there will be arguments later.
Those cars also have a different multimedia system and different sizing for service parts, which makes the work more cumbersome in a Dutch workshop.

Because the Edge was built in North America and was sold here only briefly, new body parts are difficult and slow to obtain. A front bumper or a tailgate soon becomes a project in itself.

The Edge has permanent four-wheel drive and an automatic that has to cope with the weight of the car. Ask whether the gearbox shifts smoothly and whether there are any fault messages relating to the drive system.
Look at the intermediate shaft and the rear differential as well. On a car that has done a lot of towing, that is where the most has been demanded.
On the post-facelift versions it is an eight-speed automatic with an electronic selector dial; that dial itself is a known fault point.
The label refers to a calculation by the insurer: repairing the car costs more than it is now worth. Because the market value of a rare model is low and the parts are expensive, that threshold is quickly reached.
Weigh up, car by car, whether repair pays or whether the value lies more in the components: the engine, the eight-speed automatic, the drivetrain or the complete interior.
Retrieve the damage history via the chassis number and ask for the inspection reports as well. With an imported example, it also pays to check the American history.
Also check that the vehicle’s registration record is clean. With a complete file, re-registration or export to Germany, Poland or further east goes considerably more smoothly.
With a model you rarely come across, you want to be sure of the seller.
